Committee member mentoring group
Alan Morris (Keyworth)
Barbara Wallace (Keyworth)
Jean Hogg (Southwell)
We set up this sub-committee with view to setting up workshops to help new and
existing committee post holders (posts of chair, secretary, treasurer, membership secretary, group co-ordinator, & newsletter editor), and to exchange ideas between us on what we think is good practice. At the last workshop, 12 U3A members volunteered
to act as mentors for new/existing post-holders in our area.
We all know that committee members have a very important part in running a U3A successfully and yet there are few sources of support for them if they would like to discuss matters with someone having experience of the same U3A role.
With this in mind 12 U3A committee members, from all over the county, attended a workshop, late last year, to establish a number of mentors for new and existing post holders in U3As in Nottinghamshire. All of them were themselves experienced committee members and they are willing to listen and give advice and support where and when it is sought. They are not there to tell people what to do. Their code of practice includes ensuring confidentiality of any matters raised with them.
With a number of new U3As expected to be established in the next few years and with the natural turnover of committee members it is hoped the present mentors, and others too, will be available to fulfil a very useful role for Nottinghamshire U3As in the immediate future.
If you or a friend would like to talk to a mentor please contact Liz Wilson.
We intend to hold more workshops in future so if you are an experienced committee member and are interested in becoming a mentor please contact Alan Morris.

Website group
John Hollins (Nottingham) has set up a small group to help members design their own website. We are having a look at the following:
1. Using Gimp ... free photo-editing software
2. Using Weebly and 110mb dot com to build a website similar this one
3. Using Kompozer (free website-building software) to build a site like Nottm U3A's.
JH has set up the jwebsdesign website for teaching purposes, with introductory notes on all the above, and lots more. If you're interested, please phone ...

This sub-committee has been set up to assist our IT group leaders in teaching computer beginners … looking at what hardware and software could be used, access to broadband internet, a course structure and educational materials, funding for all this, and ways of teaching beginners. We are planning to set up a workshop to discuss all this with IT group leaders in our area.
